This is a basic breakout board for the FTDI FT232RL USB to serial IC. The pinouts of this board match the FTDI cable to work with official Arduino and cloned 3.3V o 5V Arduino boards, and it can also be used for general serial applications. The main advantage of this board is that it brings out the DTR pin as opposed to the RTS pin of the FTDI cable. The DTR pin allows the Arduino target to auto-reset when a new Sketch is downloaded. This is a really nice feature to have because allows a sketch to be downloaded without having to hit the reset button every time. This board will auto reset any Arduino board that has the reset pin brought out to a 6-pin connector.
The pins labeled as BLK and GRN correspond to the colored wires on the FTDI cable. The black wire on the FTDI cable is GND, green is CTS. This board includes a RX and TX LEDs to see the serial traffic and verify if the board is working. This board was designed to diminish the cost of the Arduino development boards. Our Arduino Pro mini and LilyPad boards use this type of connector.
The default configuration is 3.3V but you can easily change it to 5V (see documents).
Note: This new version of FTDI Breakout has the VCC, 5V, 3.3V, GND, TX, RX, RTS, CTS and DTR pins reflected in order to provide greater versatility when using the board.
Employ a USB cable with a miniB connector to use this board.
